THREE WAYS TO GO SOLAR

Same sunshine.
Different ways
to get there.

Cash. Loan. Lease.
Understand the differences. Choose with confidence.

START WITH OWNERSHIP

Own the system.
Or lease the equipment.

With cash or a loan, you purchase the solar system. With a lease, a provider owns the equipment and you pay to use it. That choice shapes the cost, responsibilities, and flexibility of your agreement.

01 / CASH

Buy it
outright.

Pay the purchase price without borrowing. You own the equipment and avoid loan interest.

The appeal
No ongoing solar loan or lease payment.
The tradeoff
A larger upfront investment; you arrange maintenance and repairs, subject to warranties.
A question to ask
What is included in the complete installed cash price?

02 / LOAN

Own it.
Pay over time.

Borrow to purchase the system, then repay the lender under the loan terms.

The appeal
Ownership with costs spread across scheduled payments.
The tradeoff
Interest and fees can increase total cost. Approval, down payment, and collateral requirements vary.
A question to ask
How do the cash price, financed price, APR, and total payments compare?

03 / LEASE

Use solar.
Lease the system.

A provider owns the equipment. You make lease payments for its use over the contract term.

The appeal
Often little or no upfront cost, with provider maintenance typically included.
The tradeoff
You do not own the system. Annual payment increases, transfer terms, and buyout rules depend on the contract.
A question to ask
What will I pay over the full term, and what happens when it ends?

COMPARE WITH CLARITY

A few questions.
A more informed
decision.

Ask for the details in writing before you sign.

  1. 01

    What is the total commitment?

Compare upfront amounts, all scheduled payments, fees, and any annual increases over the same period.

  2. 02

    Can my payment change?

For a loan, check whether a later payment assumes a lump-sum prepayment. For a lease, ask about an annual escalator.

  3. 03

    Who handles service?

Confirm monitoring, repair coverage, roof-related removal and reinstallation costs, and warranty exclusions.

  4. 04

    What if my plans change?

Review early payoff, buyout, transfer, and end-of-term terms before a move or refinance.

ONE MORE DISTINCTION

Lease or PPA?
Check what you pay for.

A lease generally charges for use of the equipment. A power purchase agreement (PPA) generally charges for the electricity it produces, usually per kilowatt-hour. Both involve third-party ownership, but their payment structures differ.

Ask which agreement you are being offered and how its charges change over time.
